The Annual Fire Safety Statement is a strict requirement under the NSW EP&A Act 2000. Enforced by the NSW Fire Brigade and local councils in accordance with the AS1851 and AS2293.2 standards, annual certification is required for all Fire Engineering Solutions. It is only when a building has passed thorough inspection and testing that they are issued a AFSS Certificate.
It is important to mention that, as of October 1, 2017, the AFSS can only be signed by a Competent Fire Safety Practitioner. In the past, the building owner or manager’s signature were sufficient for the AFSS. However, with this old procedure, buildings that do not meet the fire safety standards obtained certification which they are not eligible to. The new regulation is a guarantee that your establishment has been certified by a competent, legal fire safety practitioner who has been meticulous in the inspection and assessment of your building.
Inability to secure or produce an AFSS certificate on demand will lead to substantial fines starting at $2,000 a week!
